The Effect of High Impact, Low Maintenance Christian Living 

Every time I preach a sermon I want to make a difference 

Romans 5:8 says, “God demonstrated his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”. 

Jesus paid the penalty for our sins! And he doesn’t wait until you get your act together. 

But there is more. When Jesus began His ministry on earth, by standing up in the synagogue in Nazareth to read the Scriptures, He outlined His mandate – 

“to preach good news to the poor….to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour…..” (Luke 4:18-19).

Isaiah 50:7 prophesies the resolute nature of Jesus to face the cross and obtain the glory set before Him…

“For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.”  – Isaiah 1:7

Setting my face like a flint means to follow in Christ’s footsteps, separate from worldly influences. It also means to be disciplined, being loyal to God and His truth above all else.

DEATH, BURIAL, RESURRECTION, 

ASCENSION & SEATING OF JESUS 

The qualification of disciples IS NOT THE MISSION STATEMENT

Matthew 10:38
Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me.

The mission statements he gives to his disciples 

Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. – Matthew 10:8 

The command to the CHURCH is closely related to the actual 

Mark 16:15 

And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 

The Beatitudes are what I might call the functional and cultural mission statement of Christianity. ( the society of the Kingdom within the earth ) 

In the annals of history, no discourse ever altered the trajectory of the human race for the better than this sermon. 

this one teaching ignited a moral revolution that hoisted humanity on its shoulders,

In this sermon Jesus taught us the priorities of humility, forgiveness, compassion, showing mercy, pursuing purity, and working for peace 

The Beatitudes contrast to Moses Law. As opposed to what not to do, the Beatitudes inform us what to do, and how to feel about it, and it serves as Christ’s constant reassurance and encouragement in the face of Earthly challenges.

The Beatitudes became the cultural mission statement for Christianity within any society.    

What Jesus looks like to humanity is our redeemer. (Luke 4:18) 

What His disciples look like are warriors that take on hell. (Matthew 10:8)

But what Christianity and the church look like is the sermon on the mount.  (Matthew 5) 

You will remember that the Functional Mission statement for King Jesus 

I am here to do my father’s business …

The apostles in their writings refer back to the Beatitudes over and over again as the embodiment of what authentic Christianity looks like.

Furthermore, Christianity’s system of thought and ethics, built on the teachings of Christ, truly became a high blessing to the earth. Nothing like it had ever been seen before.

Today we call them “the Beatitudes”, a word that means ‘high blessedness’, referring to each time Jesus used the word blessed in this prologue to the most memorable, powerful sermon ever preached – a teaching known as the Sermon on the Mount.

* It transformed the way people thought about the value of human life

* It transformed the way people thought about the purpose of human life

* It transformed the way people thought about the destination of human life. 

Matthew 5

 And seeing the multitudes, He went up on a mountain, and when He was seated His disciples came to Him. 2 Then He opened His mouth and taught them, saying:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are those who mourn,
For they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek,
For they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful,
For they shall obtain mercy.

8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
For they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
For they shall be called sons of God.

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, For theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. 

12 Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you

Internal posture, emotional intelligence, how to live serving an audience of ONE, what you do and how you live matters, bringing the Kingdom, when a culture looks more like heaven than it looks like hell…etc etc etc 

Those people left there and were so impacted by the power of the holy spirit and the words of Jesus Christ that they had a new worldview, a whole new set of priorities, and a whole new culture. 

THE IMPACT 

I was doing a Q and A session with the followers of Shaun Bolz and I said that Rod Parsely was in the room. We were out at Redemption Ranch and Ben had my little studio set up so I could. 

I was chatting with a lady named Ronda and she said “ Please tell Pastor Rod that his sermon called “No dry season” changed my life forever. 

I got to relay that message and I thought what sermons have changed my life? 

I was at Bishop Paul S Morton’s Pastor’s conference in New Orleans and Rod was preaching there. TD Jakes said something that …

“IT IS ONE THING FOR GOD TO GIVE YOU THE PLAN, ITS ANOTHER THING FOR YOU TO CONFORM YOUR LIFE TO THE IMAGE OF GOD’S PLAN.” – T.D Jakes 

“MY MAIN RESPONSIBILITY AS THE SENIOR PASTOR IS TO BE THE CHIEF ARCHITECT OF THE CULTURE OF THE HOUSE.” – Erwin McManus

EVERYTHING IN THE KINGDOM IS RELATIONAL BEFORE IT IS FUNCTIONAL – Graham Cooke

“TIME IS GOD’S WAY OF KEEPING EVERYTHING FROM HAPPENING AT ONCE.” – Albert Einstein  

It is a lot like looking for water in dry places or trying to find the pass through the mountains 

I’ve gotta find God! I’ve gotta see the Kingdom!! I’ve gotta have life!!! 

Matthew 5:6 

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
For they shall be filled.

Who is going to make you thirst for Jesus?

1. Remember a time when you experienced the presence of God

I have set the lord before me continually 

Psalm 16:8 

“. . . whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (John 4:14).

“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and who believes in me will never be thirsty”

 (John 6:35).

“On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, ‘If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him” (John 7:37-38).

“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy?” (Isaiah 55:1-2).

“O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water” 

(Psalm 63:1).

“The Spirit and the bride say, ‘Come!’ And let him who hears say, ‘Come!’ Whoever is thirsty, let him come; and whoever wishes, let him take the free gift of the water of life” (Revelation 22:17).

Tommy Tenney, in his devotional, Experiencing His Presence: Devotions for God Chasers prays a prayer that we all may need to use daily to build our hunger for God:

“Lord Jesus, my soul aches at the mere mention of Your name. My heart leaps for every rumor of Your coming, and each possibility that You will manifest Your presence. I’m not satisfied with mere spiritual dainties. I’m ravenously hungry for You in Your fullness. I’m desperate to feast on the bread of Your presence and quench my thirst with the wine of Your Spirit.”
